One Foot in the Grave: Wm. Mark Simmons

Well, this one showed up as a present at Christmas, not the best time to dig into a vampire (excuse me, "Vampyre") novel, but hey...

This isn't the most evenly paced novel, but even with the ups and downs the author has managed to construct an internally consistent universe to run his character through. ...and as a first novel it works just fine. The main character is ... well ... not a vampire. ...only he is. More would be a spoiler and it's that aspect of the story that will draw me back into his world to read the second book in the series.

What this book isn't is another Southern Vampire novel. ...or another Anita Blake takes on the latest heavy duty baddie. What it is is the setup for a series that looks to be rather interesting if you're into paranormal universes intersecting with the everyday world. I'm reminded of Emma Bull's War for the Oaks, and that bodes well for the next book.
