Prayers for the Assassin: Robert Ferrigno

The year is 2015, and the worst terrorist nightmare has come true. Suitcase nuclear bombs have destroyed NYC, Washington DC, and Mecca. Since Mecca was also a target, naturally the accusing finger is pointed at Israel and the Zionists. Afterwards, the US splits along lines as Islamic states are formed to the North, and Christian states are formed throughout the Bible Belt. Yes, this requires a lot from the reader in suspending all political and religious beliefs in thinking America would pick Islam over Christianity, but it's worth it in the end.

Some 20 years later, Sarah Dougan is the niece of Redbeard, who leads the State Security forces in the Islamic states. She's writing a book about the "Zionist Betrayal" of 2015, only to find the so-called betrayal isn't really the Zionists at all. An Islamic billionaire called the Old One (think Mahdi) is behind the bombings in hopes of initiating a New World Order...the Muslim way.

The Old One wants Sarah dead before she has the chance to reveal what she knows and blows his plans to hell and back, so he sends one nasty, badass, psychopathic assassin out for her blood. The only person that can protect Sarah is her lover, former fedayeen soldier/killer Rakkim Epps. Fortunately, he's agnostic and the religious waters aren't further mucked up by one more opinion on God's point of view.

It's more than a little difficult putting everything I know aside and jumping into the futuristic mayhem of this story. It's also difficult to even find a landmark to use as a reference point as this rollercoaster zings along through the carved up States. This definitely turns everything on its head to the point of motion sickness.

This is the first Robert Ferrigno novel I've ever read, so I don't have a style or content comparison. But it's good...it's different. It's fast as lightning. But it's not something I would pick up off the shelf at the local bookstore, because this is way out of my realm. For those who like an "alternate reality" scenerio, I'd have to recommend it.
