The Corean Chronicles, Books One through Three: L.E. Modesitt Jr.

I'll take these three as a unit since they stand together and form one group of what will be at least two likely three-part story arcs.

Think old west sheep farmer of another universe with some paranormal powers gets drafted into the army, impressed into another army, escapes after destroying the enemy power base and returns to his own land to clean things up a bit. ...and he's not even the sheriff. That would be volume one...

Volume two has him recalled to active duty to take on sequential apparently impossible assignments, which he handles rather nicely as he learns more about his abilities and uncovers a cabal of aliens feeding off his world's life force.

So what to do in volume three? Take on those aliens directly (with the help of his wife) and try to seal their access to his planet. All this while dealing with the extinction of the true natives of his planet (his people may not be indigenous either) and yet keeping the general population (and the generals of the armies) from knowledge of the outlanders.

If that sounds like a full plate you're ready for L.E. Modesitt Jr. to dish up another platter of his universes. Oh, and there will be more courses to this meal: volume four starts off not long after the outlanders have come to Corus and presents events from their perspective.

...and don't expect these to be a snack to relax with at the beach for light summer reading; this author expects you to chew on his philosophies a bit before finishing your meal.
