I, An Actress : The Autobiography of Karen Jamey: by Jeffrey Dinsmore

Karen Jamey Hitler has dreams of becoming an actress. In this madcap, darkly comedic offering from Jeffrey Dinsmore, Karen Jamey tells all in this hilarious, fictionalized autobiography about her climb to stardom.

Her roots are a long way from the Hollywood dream. Born in Baltimore to German parents working the minstrel circuit -- and stuck with a last name soon to be synonymous with pure evil -- she's a long way from the glitter and glam of L.A.. That doesn't stop the self-absorbed Karen, though. Intent on making a name for herself, she isn't above taking out her competition for her first part. When her mother runs off to be a hobo, Karen and her father ditch the last name and off to L.A. they go.

A corrupt agent, a mobster boyfriend, and a banana republic revolutionary are just part of the fun of Jamey's life. She's even dragged up before the House Un-American Activities Committee in a face off with Joe McCarthy. And true to form, no autobiography is complete without a total breakdown from booze and drug use. It wouldn't be Hollywood, right? Jamey is exactly what you would expect a starlet to be: a narcissist.

Great for an afternoon with a cocktail in hand, this is a fun, sordid, lowdown read. I'd suggest a Bloody Mary.
