Past Redemption: Savannah Russe

Book Two: The Darkwing Chronicles
Picking up where Book One leaves off -- with a little R&R in between, and a new member named Bubba -- Team Darkwing is called on to stop the influx of an expensive, deadly designer drug called susto. When the team is told to meet at a local pub and J fails to show, recon is on the agenda.

Unfortunately, Daphne spots Darius in the crowd with a hot, evil-eyed girl on his arm. In a rush to put Darius out of her mind -- and Guinness on board for strength -- she meets St. Julien Fitzmaurice sitting at the bar. She's instantly attracted to him in a maybe-he'll-do way, but even that idea is blown to hell when a girl OD's on top of the bar right in front of them. Suddenly, "Fitz" is nowhere to be found when the cops and paramedics show up.

It's not the first OD, and it won't be the last. Who is behind the manufacturing of this drug is a mystery but as the story unfolds, it's clear there are serious political ramifications when the trail leads to the uber rich dwellers of the Hamptons. Daphne's love for Darius (my, what a complicated matter that turned out to be) is dragging her deeper and deeper into trouble when a band of vampire killers make several attempts to kill Daphne and the members of Team Darkwing during the investigation. Is Darius setting them up, or is it another branch of US intelligence? Vigilantes? Loonies? Darius isn't very forthcoming about anything. Daphne is growing increasingly attracted to Fitz but he is not what he seems, either. Oh, what a tangled web we weave.

J, Cormac, Benny, and Daphne's mother are all present and accounted for, with a little more depth and motivation added to each character. This isn't as "fun" as the last one due to its darker edge, but it's still a grand adventure.
