Ah, Space Opera, one of my favorite places to go to get away... Weber is known for his several series, most staged over wide time spans and across several political dynasties. This one is a bit of a change though; it's a stand alone that has the feel of a much broader reaching story.
Part of that may be that a lead character is literally one of the original Furies. Part of it may be the pace at which Weber pushes the reader throughout ( the book is almost always a sprint). Part of it may be the sheer audacity of his premise of melding three personalities into one being...
Oops, I almost went too far there! ...but if you were a jaded ex-commando who had a serious need for some vengeance and you hooked up with the essence of vindictiveness? Yeah, it gets real interesting real quickly. ...and when it appears that even simple things like 'pirates of the spaceways' are not so simple after all? Yep, that's when this one really takes off. ...and gets into much more than the typical sociology of the genre; Weber takes us along an a psychological study of uncontrolled and uncontrollable rage and its effects.
Very simply put, this novel is one that I've read at least once a year since latching on to it. It has enough hard core tech to meet the challenge of space opera and enough hard core thinking to keep you from putting it down until you're finished reading it. Definitely recommended!
