Kindred: The Shadows of Night: Ellen Fisher
Romance: Paranormal & Fantasy
Book 1: Kindred Series
Humans have fled to a far distant planet and evolution and magic gives them shifting powers. Hart is a stag shifter and Katara is a feline shifter. Enemies from birth, Hart puts aside his ancient prejudices to save the woman who has been attacked by the fang Kindred and left for dead. When Katara awakens she is distraught that she wasn’t left to die with honor and is now in the hands of the Stag kindred. Thinking to set her free once she is healed, Hart doesn’t count on his father’s hatred remaining and finds him put in charge of Katara the prisoner. When a chance of escape arrives, Katara grabs it and flees toward the forest with Hart hot on her heels. Together they are pursued by a common enemy far more dangerous than both their kin realize. Hart and Katara must find a way, not only to make there peoples accept their relationship, but also to bring them together to fight a Kindred who hates the both of them.
Ellen Fisher has created a fabulous shifter world, capable of producing a fabulous series. Ms. Fisher’s descriptions had me feeling as though I was really in the forest or the city with the characters. Both Hart and Katara are well-drawn characters that learned a lot about themselves and each other as the book progressed. Hart is a hero I’d love to meet in real life, not just in a book, and Katara is a kickass heroine quite capable of looking after herself, while not being dominant enough to overshadow the hero. The forbidden love theme was written with an interesting twist with both being able to shift into two totally different animals. The pacing was slow at times, but not enough to stop me from continuing the book. I would have liked to learn a bit more about their common enemy – the fang kindred – but I presume that will happen in future books. Although the book ended well enough for the romance thread, I wanted to know more about the conflict and what happens next. Part two of this series can’t come quick enough for me and I’m hoping it will be Prong’s story. I highly recommend The Shadows of Night for all fans of a good paranormal romance.
