Caroline Dutton is he illegitimate daughter of a Duke with less than stellar morals. But her luck is about to change. Drayton Mackenzie has just inherited her estranged father's title and shows up on her doorstep to tell her that her father has died and, before doing so, he had a change of heart and wanted to acknowledge Caroline and her two other illegitimate sisters. Caroline regretfully agrees and she and Drayton leave to collect the siblings.
It doesn't take long for the sexual undercurrents to surface as Caroline and Drayton make their way to Ryland Castle to make the estate presentable and to prepare for Caroline's introduction into English Society. As the whirlwind takes shape, both are happy to continue their secret trysts in Drayton's bed at night, as both have agreed to enjoy their carnal pleasures until the time comes for both to find advantageous marriages and go their separate ways.
Each face their own inner battles as Caroline begins to realize that she could care less about convention and the strictures of English Society and Drayton believes that he is protecting Caroline's happiness by removing himself from the picture as her guardian so that she will be free to make a profitable marriage. But is this what they really want?
Maybe it was the fact that I've been reading books that don't fit into my typical genres and I was just glad to have a romance novel in front of my nose again, but I thoroughly enjoyed this book. A swift plot and well developed characters made the pages fly by. The author gives us the opportunity to really connect with the characters and, for the first time in a long time, I actually felt the emotions that the characters experienced in the story.
If you enjoy Regency romance, this book is for you.
