Lancelot is the first book in a new series by Gwen Rowley surrounding the notorious legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table. I was pleasantly surprised to see how the author put her own spins on the legend to make it her own.
Traveling in disguise in order to have the opportunity to joust at tournament, as knowing that no mortal man can defeat him, no one will tilt against the great Lancelot du Lac, Lancelot becomes lost and ends up at Corbenic where he meets Lady Elaine. As Lancelot was the one who had dealt the crippling blow to Sir Torre, Elaine's brother, Lancelot tries to keep his identity a secret from his hosts. Lancelot and Elaine are immediately drawn to one another and their relationship blooms.
Over the ensuing years, Lancelot and Elaine experience ups and downs as Lancelot is torn between his loyalties to his sovereigns, Arthur and Guinevere, the knowledge of the destiny that the Lady of the Lake has bestowed upon him, and his love for Elaine. At the same time, Elaine combats her own feelings towards Lancelot against the inadequacy she feels when she visits Camelot and the rumors about Lancelot and Guinevereās close relationship.
But, little do Lancelot and Elaine know that there are other, magical forces at work against them.
Though the story has been told a million times, in a million different ways, this novel was extremely entertaining to read and I applaud the author for incorporating her own twists to certain aspects of the legend to bring the reader a happy ending. Lancelot's character more than made up for any depth that Elaine's character may have lacked in the story. If you're looking for some entertainment to add to your summer reading list, pick up the book, grab a glass of wine and enjoy.
