In the follow-up to Fetish, Moss picks up Makedde Vaderwall’s life after being kidnapped by the Stiletto Slasher, and rescued at the last minute by her lover, Sydney detective Andrew Flynn.
The middle-ranked model has returned to her home in Vancouver to get her life together, and get her Masters in Forensic Psychology at the University of Vancouver. And get away from her lover, Sydney detective Andy Flynn. He’s seen her at her most vulnerable and she cannot reconcile with that turn of events. Her answer to that dilemma is to have nothing to do with him.
With a year passing, the trauma still lingers. Mak is unable to sleep and having nightmares, and no way is she about to date again. It seems the reader has seen the last of Andy Flynn, until he arrives on Mak’s campus for a criminal profilers convention and to assist in catching yet another serial killer – this one is picking off the college girls one by one. But instead of being drawn back to Andy, she begins dating campus security guard, Roy Blake.
The dramatic set-up is a bit formulaic when Mak finds herself in the middle of yet another murderer’s crosshairs. Roy begins acting strangely, and the reader knows Mak has no way out of this without Andy.
Really, that doesn’t detract from this smart, well written, steamy novel. As a heroine, Mak has a lot of chutzpah, determined to get past the trauma she has suffered. The reader couldn’t help but care about her predicament, and root for Andy winning back his beloved. Plus, the ending comes as a shock. Tied together, this makes for a really good crime thriller.
