To lose a spouse is devastating enough but when Cynthia Lyon's husband Tom, dies, she realises just how much she depended on him for everything. Throwing her self into her work, circumstances eventually brings another problem her way: a leaking roof. After calling up several companies to fix it, Caleb Jenkins soon takes up Cynthia's offer and she draws up a contract only for him. With growing excitement, in time, she hopes that this gorgeous young man will be able to fill the gaping hole left by her now deceased partner.
The title of this novel immediately sparked my interest. From the first tentative steps of sexual activity, I have considered my self as an acquired taste. I find that men either fall head over heels in love with me or hate me with a vengeance, there is no in between. So, I couldn't help but wonder just where this book was going to take me. Would it mirror my own difficulties or would it draw me completely away in another direction entirely? In the end, I was pleasantly surprised.
Dipping into the first paragraph of An Acquired Taste, one word immediately came to mind: soft. With the rest of the review to complete, I seriously hoped that it would continue to actively encourage those kind of thoughts. Luckily, it did. Throughout the remainder of the novel, this view never really left me and in addition to this, reading about Cynthia's heartache straightaway provoked feelings of empathy within me. As an author, if you're able to do this, preferably in the early stages of the novel, then you can be assured that the reader will continue to the very end.
I enjoyed this book, not only because of the unique and sexy fun between the two main characters but because of the impression it made on me on a personal level. An inspiring read.
