Jessica Matthews, widowed mother of two, is taking out the garbage that her son "forgot" to when she is attacked and left for dead. Patrick O'Halloran, a 4,000 year old vampire (son of Ruadan, the first vampire) saves her by making her a Turn-Blood. On the night she is attacked and "reborn" ten of her fellow Broken Heart citizens were also turned. Oops there goes the PTA. How will she ever fit this into her busy lifestyle?
Irish lore is woven thru the story line which is rich with Gaelic phrases. Thank God for the glossary in the back of the book. I prefer Jessica’s glossary, it is written with wit and sarcasm, two characteristics I'm quite fond of. The characters are likeable and quirky; I laughed along with and was touched by some of the hard decisions Jessica has to make as a mother. Even though she’s a vampire, her choices are the choices quite a few of us are faced with. The need to protect your children above all else is an admirable quality and the author lets you know that is Jessica’s top priority. She is sarcastic and funny and utterly capricious.
When I read the blurb for this book, I was not impressed or thrilled, but I guess the old adage is correct that you can’t judge a book by its cover. While this wasn't on the top of my "to read" list, its successor, Don't Talk Back to Your Vampire, will be.
