Sarah Leaford’s father is being held in a prison in Paris and the vision of her dead mother has led her to the doorstep of "Gentleman Jack", London's most notorious thief and sworn enemy to Sarah's father. After Sarah employs Jack's assistance in freeing her father, things don't go quite as planned. As Sarah cannot trust a thief, she also promises to marry Stephen Layton in return for her father's escape. Sarah's uncle conspires against her as he has designs on taking over her father's title and fortune, and Stephen turns out to not be as trustworthy as she had once thought.

Things turn dangerous as Sarah is forced to join Jack on his journey through a perilous France, torn by revolution. In a tale of political intrigue, spies, and thieves, Sarah and Jack meet up with danger at every corner of their journey. Soon, Sarah begins to see Jack for the man that he is, and Jack learns that there are things more important in life than revenge.

This is definitely one of the better romance novels that I have read in quite some time. The author has done a wonderful job of telling a tale full of alliances and betrayals, love and hate, loyalty and the need for revenge. We are presented with a wide array of interesting characters and a fast-paced story that keeps you reading into the middle of the night, waiting to see what happens next. This entertaining novel has earned a spot on my "keeper" shelf and will definitely be read again in the future.
