The Slightest Provocation: Pam Rosenthal

Mary Stansell has been estranged from her husband, Kit, for nine years. Suddenly, he reappears in her life as she is making her way back home from the continent. While their brief meeting in Calais has proven that desire still has the two of them within its grips, they quickly realize that their differences have not faded and that their reasons for separation are as strong as ever.

Back at home, Mary and Kit continue drawing lines in the sand over the political turmoil that is threatening England. Each on different sides of the issues of political reform, and the revolt that is on the horizon, they soon realize that they must learn to use their differences of opinion to their advantage, and put aside the pride that had hurt their marriage so long ago.

I must have missed 50 pages while I was reading this book as I seemed to have missed the climax of this story. It just wasn't there; non-existent. It was devoid of excitement, nothing to provoke me to keep reading. The plot shifted choppily from past to present, leaving me confused and bewildered. With so much of the story depending on the history of the main characters' relationship, very little was explained as to who the characters really were in the past, as well as in the present. There were too many aspects left unexplained, which, I feel, would have been crucial insight to the story. All in all, I found the book lacking in several categories that left the story weak and inadequate, at best.
