Fifteen years ago, Brooke Yeager came downstairs to find her stepfather, Zachary Tavell, with a gun in his hand…and it’s pointing at her dead mother, Anne.
Now a successful realtor in Charleston, Brooke has gone on with her life and feels safe since Tavell is in jail for a very long time. While showing a house late one night with her look-alike colleague Mia, gunshots are fired into their car, killing Mia and wounding Brooke. Confused and shaken, Brooke manages to find the one place she feels safe: the house of Sam Lockhart, the detective who investigated Anne’s murder.
But the nightmare is only beginning when she learns Zachary Tavell has escaped from prison. Even under the protection of Sam, and his son Vincent, it’s obvious this killer will get to her one way or another. Weird messages appear that are linked to Anne’s death, and a set of nasty murders convince Brooke that she, and everyone else she cares for, is in danger.
Have you ever read a book and swear you’ve read it before? I had that odd feeling of déjà vu about halfway into Last Whisper.
It’s a rather ordinary, cookie cutter romantic suspense. Change the names, locale, and the killer’s identity…which isn’t really a mystery at all, no matter how many false leads are thrown in to make things vaguely interesting. The romance between Brooke and Vincent isn’t exactly enthusiastic, either. I expected sparks to fly since they’re in mortal danger, but instead I was left with and??? Where’s the rest of it???
If you’re looking for romance with heat, and suspense with…well, suspense…look elsewhere.
