Star Brigade: First Renaissance: C.C. Ekeke

11171699.gifIt's human nature to speculate about the future. We all wonder what life will be like 100, 200, even 1000 years from now. It seems that we have made more advances in the last 100 years then mankind has made in the last 2000. If we're propelling forward that fast can real true space travel be far behind? And if we get there, what or who will we find waiting for us?

It's the 25th century and humans have managed to destroy the earth so completely that they are forced to locate and colonize new solar systems and planets. The problem arises in that mankind is inherently destructive and doesn't think about the people that may already be living there. When they land on the planet Sollus they proceed to overrun and run off the current inhabitants, a race of psychic beings called the Korvenites. Once it becomes clear that the Korvenites aren't going to lay down and take it they are made anathema, herded into internment camps and altered with bolts in their heads to control their powers. As history has shown however, if you push someone enough, they will eventually push back, and the results can be horrifying and irreparable.

Haubram Nwosu is a captain in the Star Brigade, a type of special forces for the Galatic Union of Planetary Republics. He is also a Maximal, humans that through evolution have been endowed with powers that can vary from creating heat and fire to throwing sonic shocks. As the Korvenites begin their final bid for freedom Haubram and his Star Brigade will be called upon to stop them, though the things he and his team learn about the Korvenites and their treatment will make them rethink some of the GUPR's decisions.

Okay, so I don't usually review sci-fi but this one was a direct submission by the author and I'm a softy so I agreed to read it. I have to admit, I was skeptical at first. I judged the book on the cover and the cover is cheesy. The book itself however is actually very good. The author has done a good job of creating a well-rounded world of beings and environments. I mean, let's be honest. It's hard to have an original sci-fi thought anymore but the author has managed to come up with some good ideas. I rather enjoyed it and I'm kind of hoping that there will be a sequel. I do recommend this book for sci-fi fans.
