The Illustrated Dracula: Bram Stoker and Jae Lee

illustrated draculaBram Stoker’s Dracula is my favorite novel of all time. Reams of essays have been written on everything from sexual repression to the influence of Vlad the Impaler on Stoker’s imagination, but I have no such lofty intention with this review. I am merely a rabid fan, having read this classic so many times I have lost count.

This newest illustrated version is a gem with an entirely different vision. Best known for his work at Marvel, and creator of Hellshock with Image Comics, Jae Lee’s dark-edged gothic style is a sumptuous delight. In comparison with my own pen-and-ink illustrated copies, Lee’s lush offerings at crucial points make these seem like juvenile sketches. When you happen upon them while reading, they are stunning and full of life with just the right hint of menace.

With a faux antique cover, this volume is highly recommended for any collector’s shelf.
