Everbody Kills Somebody Sometime - Robert J. Randisi“I’m Eddie Gianelli. In Brooklyn they used to call me Eddie G, and I guess it was only natural the moniker would follow me to Vegas. For years I had come to Las Vegas like everybody else, to see some shows and play a little blackjack, but eventually I learned that it was Vegas itself I loved. It was the smell and the feel, the limitless food and sex and the opportunities, the pulse of the place…”

It is Las Vegas circa 1960 and Eddie G is the pit boss for the Sands Casino. While the Rat Pack is in town to film Ocean’s 11, Dean Martin begins receiving threatening letters. Frank Sinatra asks Eddie to find the culprit. What starts as a simple favor soon becomes a dangerous and deadly mystery Eddie must solve.

I loved this book. It was like a softer, looser and jazzier take on the traditional hard-boiled detective story. Randisi’s descriptions of the places and characters within Las Vegas do an exceptional job of bringing the city to vibrant life.

The story has a vintage vibe, like something from a bygone era. Amid all the breasts, legs and broads are Eddie’s observations on race, religion, sex and gender that give the story even more of an authentic feel.

Some readers may find the explicit violence to women disturbing, especially given the acceptance of it by characters in the book.

I highly recommend this book.
