Pink Jinx: Sandra Hill
Rating: 3 stars
She can’t live with him, and she can’t live without him. Attorney Ronnie Jinkowsky and her poker-playing ex, Jake Jensen, have tried out marriage (and divorce) four times and still it’s a no-go. If that isn’t enough to tear her apart, she’s stuck in the middle of an emotional tug of war between her prim-and-proper grandmother and Frank, a grandfather who doesn’t get his feathers ruffled over much at all except where Ronnie is concerned.
When Frank unexpectedly signs over his treasure-hunting business, Jinx, Inc. and his boat Sweet Jinx, Ronnie isn’t happy at all. As a corporate attorney, she wants no part of it. Things get sticky when she finds a contract with the Mafia is attached to the deal…a small matter of searching for a pink diamond necklace. And Jake wants to tag along on the expedition.
First off, stop with the !!!!!! thing. I don’t appreciate being yelled at. One gets the point across just fine, thanks.
As for the love affair, at best it’s room temperature. If sparks were supposed to be flying between Jake and Ronnie, it must have been back in Marriage #2 because it’s nowhere near Attempt #5. And really, this entire scenario is annoying. The search for the diamond necklace is nothing more than a ruse to get the two lovebirds back in the same nest. The humor isn’t humorous, the storyline stale, and the dialogue is stilted. The secondary characters serve no other purpose other than clutter up the landscape; the worst offender is Tanta Lulu. Made somewhat famous by Hill’s Cajun series, she mangles the English language beyond comprehension. It’s simply horrible from this half Cajun’s point of view. Attempting to translate the beautiful, lilting cadence of that culture usually falls flat as a pancake once it makes its way into a novel. This was no exception.
If this is any indication as to what the Jinx series has to offer, count me out.
