The opening sentence of this book will grip you quickly, and the story will hold you captive until the end. This book is about love and loss, good and evil, nature vs. nurture, and many other lessons of life.

Daniel is a stay at home dad and comic book artist with an unusually close bond to 14-year-old daughter, Trixie. Laura is a hard working college professor teaching her students about Dante’s Inferno and the many levels of hell. Role reversal not withstanding, they are your typical, well-rounded family. After being raped by the boyfriend who dumped her, Trixie and her family find their lives spiraling out of control.

This story takes you through Daniel’s past growing up in the Alaskan bush, how he climbed out of a childhood filled with violence and being an outcast, and how having his daughter shaped the person he has become. But can we ever escape our past? Do people ever really change? One choice, one mistake, and things can change forever.

This is a very powerful story of adolescence, family, and character. The story isn’t always easy to read, but it will make you think. As a unique bonus there is one of Daniels comic book stories interwoven throughout the book that interestingly parallels what Daniel is going through. I highly recommend this bestseller.
