demon angelAngels and demons have been a part of our culture and mythology since the earliest roots of humanity. We like to believe that there is a great battle being waged behind the scenes with human souls hanging in the balance. Is the good, or bad, that we do influenced by beings that we cannot truly see? And what of the creatures themselves? Perhaps the battles they are waging will affect their own souls and destinies, depending on the choices they make. In Demon Angel Meljean Brook brings forward a conflict between Hugh and Lilith that has waged for almost a millenium, one that neither is willing to let go.

The lives of Hugh and Lilith become tangled in 13th century England. Hugh is a young knight and his only duty is to protect the wife of his lord. He is truly a noble knight, worthy of a place at the Round Table. His life may have been lived out quite normally for that time period had he not become ensared in the machinations of the demon Lilith. Lilith has come to his corner of England with the express purpose of gathering souls for her father's (Lucifer's) army. Unfortunately for Lilith, she did not count on the strength of Hugh's soul. She also did not count on developing feelings for him, something that demons shouldn't be able to do. When Hugh sacrifices himself to save the honor of his lady, Lilith carries him away to save him but Hugh has already been claimed by the light and will be resurrected as a Guardian. What follows is an almost 1000 year battle between the two beings, with Hugh striving to save Lilith's soul and Lilith striving to steal his. The culmination of their love and hate will result in a modern-era war between Above and Below.

First and foremost let me say, please don't judge this book by its cover. The cover is awful but the book itself is wonderful. I was truly entranced by the story and very impressed with the author. The characters have a depth and a purpose that you don't often see in modern novels. The author did a very good job of weaving the supernatural with the normal and developing a very believable love story between these beings. This will be going on my shelf of "favorite books that I read too much". I highly recommend it.
