Good Things: Mia King
Deidre McIntosh is a forty-something woman with her own cooking and lifestyle show, Live Simple, on a local Seattle TV network. With a great designer wardrobe and living practically rent free in her gay best friend’s great digs, the only thing that could make life better is her show getting syndicated. Then in a blink of an eye, her show gets cancelled, she’s backstabbed by the production manager she hand picked herself, and her roommate announces he’s moving in with his boyfriend.
Can it get worse? Local socialite Marla Banks debuts her new show and doesn’t hesitate to rub it in that Deidre is a failure. Oh, and the landlord is evicting her which wouldn’t be a problem except she enjoyed shopping more than saving and there’s no new prospects for work. Last but not least, let’s add the icing on the cake of having a knock your socks off one-nighter with Kevin, the cute stranger she met while taking out the trash. Luckily this stranger -- though not appearing to want to repeat the encounter -- does offer her the use of his cabin in the boonies, which is the beginning of a strange new adventure for a spoiled city girl like Deidre.
This is a cute story that has the benefit of recipes for several dishes that Deidre whips up throughout the story. It may not have worked if the character wasn’t so likable, but since she’s not a total bitch (just a little stupid at times) it works.
It’s a learning-to-love and learning-who-you-are kind of book; not necessarily memorable or original but a nice little read.
