Blood Moon: Dawn Thompson
Jon Hyde-White was changed. Neither his horse nor his dog trusted him any longer, and with good cause; the transformation was almost complete. Soon he would cease to be an earl's second son and become a ravening monster. Already lust grew, begging him to drink, to devour, to swallow in great gulps hot blood from every opalescent neck -- and the blood of his fiancée, Cassandra Thorpe, would be sweetest of all. Was that not why they were chosen? Was that not the blasphemous creature Sebastian burst upon them from the London shadows? But Sebastian's evil task remained incomplete, and neither Jon nor Cassandra was beyond hope. She still smelled of meadowsweet and lilies, and he still believed in Heaven. One chance remained -- in faraway Moldavia, in a secret brotherhood, in an ancient ritual and in the power of love and the Blood Moon.
Upon first glance I will admit that I thought the book was going to be a huge and typical, vampire horror flop. Within the first few pages I found myself curious if even a tad bit amused with some of dialogue and story. The 'oh darn I'm a vampire now' progressed into a more 'look what I can do' mentality. The transformation between man and woman into vampires, the learning of their new powers, and the ability to shape shift was an interesting thing to read however I could not help myself from saying, 'Aww how CUTE!!! I want one!' when the first kitty fluff ball transformation was described.
We are transported from the prim and proper London to the uncouth almost barbarian like country of Moldavia. Here the couple continues to face one challenge after another until finally it seems that they have stumbled to the church of where a hidden band of holy elders live. The scroll's words are deemed worthless and a dead end is found before suddenly, a light is shown at the end of the tunnel offering another fork in the road ahead. Nearly penniless, hungry for blood and quite lustful, the couple meanders around unknown territory someplace between a dark and powerful vampire lord, his minions, and a large group of stake and torch-wielding human mob.
No more will be told of the story of the book for it was promptly thrown against the wall after I finished reading it. I am now beyond anxious to read the next one in the trilogy! I shall try to be patient to read Thompson's next book.
The repetition of the blessing of the holy water did get old quickly; but of course if the act was not mentioned I would of found myself asking about how in the world the couple managed to get more of that blessed liquid. After all it is never said that they carry a never-ending flask of holy water.
There is just something about seeing a wolf and a panther take on a vampire lord who is centuries' old that makes me enjoy this novel. It has a rocky start but by the third chapter your fingernails will be sinking into the pages, gripping onto the book for dear life as if the good read would surely poof away if you did not hold on tight enough. Bravo!
