witch.gifMira Hoskins life is difficult enough right now; orphaned at a young age, divorced from a philandering husband, and waiting tables at a greasy spoon while attempting to save money to put herself through college. When Jack McAllister shows up in her diner she feels an immediate physical connection to him but she chalks it up to a lack of male companionship in the six months since her divorce. When Jack saves her from a group of magickal hitmen later that night, Mira learns that everything she was taught about herself and her parents was a lie constructed to protect her. Can she trust Jack to keep her alive as she learns to wield the power awakening in her or will Jack's inner fire burn her already fragile heart?

Mira was raised from an early age by her godmother Annie. She always knew something was different about her but she never knew anything specific and she never asked. After Jack rescues her and takes her to his apartment she learns that not only is she a born air witch but also that Jack is a fire witch of a very high rank in a group called the Coven. He tells her that she is being sought by an organization called the Duskoff where she will be used as a sacrifice to raise a demon. This is how her parents died, not in a car accident as she was always told. She also learns that fire and air have a natural attraction to each other. Jack begins to train Mira to use her power but he is under strict instructions from his boss to not get physically involved with Mira. Jack has never been a one-woman man and the last thing Mira needs is an entanglement with Jack. Unfortunately, the natural attraction that draws them together also binds them tighter. Mira and Jack allow themselves to fall into each other but Jack is keeping a secret about his own past and his connections to Duskoff. His failure to tell Mira about his parentage and the part he played in the death of her parents may drive her away before he can teach her enough to save her life.

I have to say, though I don't usually like romances, I did like this book. The story itself was very good. I'm always a sucker for a good witch story and I like the way the author wove the idea of the elemental witches. I wasn't so keen on the love scenes though. Some authors write killer love scenes. These weren't so killer for the fact that there was way too much talking! Jack was described as being very dominant in bed which is fine, it's great, but he spent so much time telling Mira about what he was going to do to her that I wanted to scream at him to shut his cakehole and get to the lovin'. Other then that it was a good story. I'm looking forward to the sequel.
