In recent years the popular media has become flooded with ghost tales; books, movies, tv shows, magazine articles, newspaper stories. Everyone wants to hear about ghosts. For those rare individuals who actually live with ghosts every day though, it's not always the way Hollywood would have us believe (is anything really?). In When Ghosts Speak, Mary Ann Winkowski details the experiences that have taken her from guiding dead souls, to assisting police investigations, to providing expert opinion on shows like Ghost Whisperer.

Winkowski has been aware of the presence of ghosts since early childhood. Her grandmother encouraged her ability to comfort the restless souls and so her attendance at funerals became a regular event. She learned to accept her gift rather quickly and used it to lead lost souls along the path as best she could. Over the years she assisted individuals and familys who were experiencing things they couldn't explain in their houses and she has also taken part in police investigations that had no other avenues to pursue. These investigations occasionally led to her becoming a suspect, as she would have information that no one but the victim and the perpetrator could have. Word of her compassion and expertise got out, as things of this nature do, and she eventually came to the attention of Hollywood producers who decided to use her for a new show. The show eventually became the top rated Ghost Whisperer.

Throughout the book, Winkowski details her dealings with spirits, both good and bad, and her experiences with leading the into "the Light". She covers animal spirits, murders, suicides, and the reasons that spirits are here. She also has a chapter on how to recognize if you might have a ghost and what to do about it. The book isn't a fright-fest though. It's written in a very matter-of-fact style so those looking for spooks and chills should look elsewhere. This book is more for those that want to find the why's and wherefore's of the other side from a comforting perspective. She does this very well and lets us believe that there is a place for these restless souls to go, once they have been found by people like her.
