Demon Knight: Meljean Brook
Charlie Newcomb has spent the last few years trying to rebuild her life after a plunge to the bottom and a stint in prison. With the unwavering support of her sister, Charlie has finally reached a stable place in her life. Unfortunately, Charlie's sister also happens to be a scientist with knowledge that could be invaluable to the vampire community and they aim to obtain that knowledge for themselves.
With the help of Ethan McCabe, the Guardian known as Drifter, Charlie will find herself in a race against the vampires and the demons to save her sister and herself. As he draws closer to her Ethan finds himself falling for Charlie and keeping her safe becomes his only objective. Will he be able to keep her safe though, as her sister's loyalties crumble and Charlie’s own existence is irrevocably changed by the forces that work against them?
This is the fifth story in Meljean Brooks Guardian series and she hasn't disappointed yet. Drifter is absolutely charming in a very old-west-Wyatt-Earp kind of way. Drifter and Charlie fit seamlessly, as Brooks' characters always seem to do, with no hesitation or stuttering. The plot itself was entertaining, just twisty enough, sweet, but with the conversational and narrative sarcasm and barbs that we've come to expect from Brooks. New readers who pick this up may be a bit confused but fans of the series will rocket right along.
