The conflict between Iran and Israel heats up as Iran suddenly decides to let loose a barrage of nuclear firepower over the Israeli border. The American President is awakened by the tragic news only to be contacted by the Israeli Prime Minister moments later to be told that all is well and to not worry. As the American military studies their long-range screens the missiles simply vanish without reaching Israel. The Prime Minister refuses to explain, attributing the act to God. Is it God though...? Or have the Israelites found a weapon more powerful then the world has ever seen?
Back in Atlanta Lang Reilly has learned that one of his grant-funded researchers, Dr. Lewis, has been murdered. The research was into alternative fossil-fuel sources and it was being study jointly in Amsterdam by, Dr. Yadish, another grant-funded doctor. Lang is soon informed that Yadish was murdered in Belgium shortly before Lewis. Lang is on a plane to Belgium almost immediately. He soon becomes embroiled in a plot that appears to lead back to on of the most sacred relics of Jewish belief. As with all things in Lang Reilly's life, nothing is ever easy. He must dodge random gunfire, murderous chauffeurs, overzealous policemen, and a squad of religious fanatics in order to reach the truth and keep himself alive.
As with the previous Lang Reilly novels this one is fun. It's a well-thought out little mystery with some good action and enough intelligence to keep one's attention. Imagine Jason Bourne if he could speak Latin and philosophize while kicking in faces. Lang is the good-guy hero that you want to cuddle up with but you know he can protect you and keep you entertained, though he might get you killed by accident. Seems like a fair trade to me.
