Dream Chaser: Sherrilyn Kenyon
Rating: 4 stars
Xypher has been trapped in the Underworld, tortured by Hades for what seems an eternity. He let love make a fool of him and he's had plenty of time to consider the stupidity of his actions. He finally manages to convince Hades to allow him freedom for one month; long enough for him to take his revenge on the female who brought about his downfall. Xypher is unaware that a month is also long enough to find out what real love can be like.
Simone Dubois is the medical examiner in New Orleans and she has a special gift; she can see and speak with ghosts and she knows what's really hiding in the dark. Xypher barrels out of nowhere and saves her from being slaughtered by demons and that would have been the end of it for both of them until one of the demons snaps a pair of magic bracelets around their respective wrists. If they try to separate, they will die; a little gift from Satara, Xypher's long-gone love. Now Xypher and Simone have to find a way to remove the bracelets so Xypher can fulfill his vengeance before Hades calls him back to the Underworld. It turns out, though, that Simone has some secrets of her own that could turn everything on its head, but whether it will help or hinder no one knows.
At the rate Sherrilyn Kenyon is turning out these everything-Hunter books, you would think the boredom and repetition factor would have set in by now. It could just be that I'm still reveling in the new since this is only my third one but I really enjoy these. The characters have a sharp wit more often the not, and the verbal sparring is always entertaining. I also get a kick out of the portrayal of the gods. It always amuses me to see them cast in a humanistic tone; they're just as petty, vindictive, and spiteful as we are. The only difference is that they can kill you without touching you and look fabulous while doing it.
As with the first two, this book didn't disappoint. I look forward to the next.
