House of Whispers: Book One Of The Supernatural Properties Series: Margaret Lucke
After putting her husband through a Boston law school Claire Scanlan is repaid with infidelity and a divorce. She packs her things and moves back to San Francisco, hoping to start fresh with a career in real estate. Her first day on the job of the prestigious Golden Gate Properties offers up a chance to sell a landmark house with a dark history.
The Stefan LeGrande house is a marvel of modern architecture, designed by the architect himself as a show piece and home for his family. Unfortunately if would also become the scene of their murder. Stefan, his wife, son, and daughter would all die in the house; assumedly at the hands of his son Trevor. The house has been through several firms so far, unsold. Claire and Avery, also new to the firm, have been given the task of convincing Ben Grant, Stefan's brother, that they can sell the house. Unfortunately for Claire, the minute she enters the house, she knows why it hasn't sold. Someone is still there, and they want the truth told about that night. Only Stefan's step-daughter survived the massacre, and she isn't talking. It's left to Claire to unravel the threads of that night, and grapple her way through Avery's schemes and her own growing attraction to Ben to learn the truth behind what happened to the LeGrande's in the house that won't stop whispering.
I must say I thought that I had this one figured out immediately and I was pleased to be proven wrong. It's rather a light mystery but still quite good. I did feel that the romance may have come up a bit quick but having been through divorce myself I can understand the situation. The characters had believability to them that I wasn't fully expecting and even Avery, who you fully want to hate, had her moments of "I can relate to her". If this is the kick-off to the series then I expect good things from it.
