Rating: 3 1/2 stars
Vampire Elisha Clevon just watched her best friend launch himself into the dawn willingly. Now he's dead and Elisha has two men on her trail, cops who both have special abilities. They know what she is, who she is, and where she's running.
The danger isn't just from the humans though. Elisha's remaining vampire compatriots have their own secrets and they may just prove to be her undoing.
Written in a style that blends the stories of all the characters involved, the book centers on Elisha and her relationships with William, an aged and senile vampire who can't hunt for himself and Wade, a psychic and overly sensitive human. The forays into the stories of the vampires, and the humans, is written in a florid, almost Ricean narrative. Not only that but the descriptions of the vampires themselves sometimes score a little to closely to some of Anne Rice's more memorable characters.
The story might have worked if it had been written in a more original style. Now granted, original is hard to come by these days and while Anne Rice set the standard for epic tales of weeping, tortured vampires, there are other options to go with. Readers who want vampires don't always want them tortured. Let's see a little less self-deprecation in the future, please.
