This is the sixth novel in the Immortals series …
The musical legend Manannan mac Lir, Prince of Annwyn, and immortal half Sidhe demigod is stalked by his adoring fan girls worldwide. Mac retreats to his friends Kalen and Christine’s home to get some much needed rest, wanting nothing more than to be left alone. While there, Christine delivers some disturbing news: she believes that Mac has absorbed some death magic taint during a recent battle, and believes that to be the cause of his recent moodiness. Then a messenger arrives for Mac, bringing with him more worrying tidings.
As Guardian of the Celtic Magical Creatures in the Human World, it is Mac’s responsibility to respond when he hears reports of a faerie village attacked by death magic. Upon arrival, he finds Tamika, a 4 month old faerie infant on the verge of death. The most drastically affected victim of a life-draining spell, Tamika undergoes a dramatic change before Mac’s eyes: she and the rest of the village are mysteriously and abruptly restored to health as if the attack had never occurred.
Determined to find the cause of these events, Mac tracks the magic used to Artemis Black, a woman whose heritage is mixed with life magic and death magic. Although Mac knows he should bring her before the Sidhe Council immediately, something tells him that she should be trusted – even though Artemis betrays him, time and time again.
Ever wanted to be popular? Paparazzi seem like far too high a price to pay, in my opinion – much less an entire gender out to take you sexually against your will. It's not my cup of tea, to say the least. I can definitely sympathize with the urge to get the hell out of dodge.
Nash repeatedly takes the opportunity to illustrate several wonderful qualities in this novel; the difference between trusting and having faith in someone, redemption can come to those who thought themselves beyond saving, and love can come to those that thought themselves unlovable. But best of all, Nash shows that you don’t have to be perfect in order to know happiness.
This can be read as a stand-alone novel, but is enhanced by a reader’s knowledge of minor points if they’ve read some of the novels in the series. I’m looking forward to number seven.
