Apparently we here at BookFetish were so tickled by the idea of Dubbyah writing a book, we couldn’t stop at one comment. Rather than playing point/counter-point, because there would be no point since we both find it humorous, I thought I’d throw in my two cents – or in this economy, my $.05 9/10th.
Yes, I could go the easy route and talk about how I didn’t know Bush could read or pontificate if he was writing his book with a crayon, but I won’t. As many of you know, Mr. B is an avid reader and for that, I give him props. When the article came out about his reading competition with Karl Rove I, like many of you, thought if he read less and ran the country more, we might not be where we are now. However, to be fair, we shouldn’t begrudge George the much needed escape that reading provides, even though he’s the last person that should be “escaping” anywhere.
Just to be clear, I’m not political; I just observe and give my thoughts if the issue motivates me. I didn’t read either of the Clinton books, nor do I plan to read Laura or George W.’s -- however, I did read Kitty Dukakis’ book. I would think it much more interesting to read about Kitty wrestling her alcoholic demons, while reduced to drinking hairspray and perfume because she was so closely guarded, rather than hear excuses from G.W. as to why he sat frozen in a classroom upon hearing the news on 9/11.
It has been noted that this book is not so much a memoir as it is about life events and decisions George Jr. has made.
“I want people to understand the environment in which I was making decisions. I want people to get a sense of how decisions were made and I want people to understand the options that were placed before me,” he told the AP.
So, let me understand this… he didn’t actually make these decisions, but if he did it was because he was given no other options. Didn’t OJ Simpson write a similar book?
Hundreds of people in the publishing industry have lost their jobs, publishing houses have closed their doors, others have been acquired and then dismantled; yet, Crown is going to part with $7 million for these “insights.” Maybe after Obama is through forcing AIG to return their bonuses, he can call Dubbyah and ask him to give back the advance.
