Second Skin (Nocturne City, Book 3): Caitlin Kittredge

Rating: 2 stars

Second Skin (Nocturne City, Book 3): Caitlin KittredgeIn Nocturne City, witches and werewolves aren't the only things to be wary of. A new round of dead bodies is turning up, all werewolf pack-leaders, all shot execution style. Luna Wilder, former detective turned SWAT team member, is approached by an old co-worker from the 24th precinct; David Bryson needs help with the werewolf factions and Luna is uniquely qualified to intercede. But is she willing to go out on a limb for Bryson after the way he treated her, knowing the risks involved?

Though Luna is a werewolf she is Insoli, packless. There are dangers in her approaching any of the packs but she is likely to get more information then Bryson would. After the events of Pure Blood, Luna and Dimitri have been trying to make a relationship, but if Luna gets involved with this case, it may break them completely. It appears that the dead bodies are all pointing to the little-known Wendigo, and their handsome, charismatic leader Lucas Kennuka. Lucas has information that Luna needs, but she may not be willing, or able to pay his price.

Luna Wilder has got to be one of the most impulse-driven characters I've ever read about. She isn't a detective anymore and yet she plunges right into this case, never once considering that it is completely against procedure. She takes over and barrels along, even though it means destroying her relationship in the process. Her sheer lack of concern for anyone in her way is off-putting to say the least. After three books, I simply cannot find any redeeming value in the characters or the plot. Three strikes and Luna Wilder is out.
