Depraved: Bryan Smith The story starts off fast and furious with Hoke, a hard-ass-don't-give-a-crap-for-anyone-else type of guy, raping Jessica. Jessica has had a rough life with her mother committing suicide and drug issues in her past; but this time she won't be accepting of the things around her. Jessica arms herself and returns to Hoke's apartment, kidnapping him with the intent to avenge herself by murdering him.

Only thing is when she gets to a deserted place to do it she is interrupted by the Knichner's. The Knichner's are a bunch of redneck mutant cannibals who are always on the lookout for outsiders to literally have for lunch.

Enter Pete and his girlfriend Megan. Just traveling through Hopkins Bend while taking a short cut on their vacation, they stop at a gas station. Pete leaves Megan in the car and enters the gas station to find himself at the mercy of the Knichner's. Megan leaves the car to see what is taking him so long, only to find Pete being thrown into a van after being raped. Megan vows she will find and save him, but on the way to do so she is picked up by Hal, a local deputy who has other ideas for her. Hal brings Megan to the sheriff's office where Sheriff Rich DeMars decides they should sell her to the local strip club run by the Knichners.

While all this is taking place you are introduced to Garland, a half demon looking to use Hoke--who is still a prisoner of the Knichners--as a vessel to become human again. Garner is the one responsible for the mutations of the Knichner clan; he cursed them after they raped and deformed his daughter and killed his wife. Oh and lets not forget about Abby, a redneck cannibal herself, she is looking to make a change in her life but will she be able to find it within herself to free the family dinner?

What transpires throughout this story is a test of will for those involved. Who will survive the ordeal and who won't. How will they be affected by the terrible events they are about to witness? Will they become part of the yearly summer feast for the Knichners or will they escape? This is the basis for one of the most boring and unoriginal plots I have ever had the displeasure of reading.

First off Deputy Hal comes off as Barney Fife meets Deliverance during his brief time in the story; his death is so ridiculous it's funny. I mean getting beat to death with your own penis...come on, really! This book doesn't deliver on much at all. The story line is weak, the descriptive narrative is flimsy at best and the story line is so predictable that by the time you get half way through the book, you could put it down and tell the rest of the story from what has happened at the beginning.

If you're into a bunch of rednecks picking on some supposed upstanding citizens who turn into Arnold Schwarzenegger in Terminator then this is a book for you. However I found this to remind me of a B movie I would have seen at the drive-in as a kid in the 70's...you know back when things were suggestive in the movie and you inferred what you wanted into them. If this is the type of stuff that the author calls a good effort, I would have to say he needs to set his standards a bit higher and quit insulting us, the readers. I'm rating this a single star just for the originality of being beaten to death with your own penis.
