Ray Hayes is tired of living. With no girlfriend, a job he hates and a boss he hates even more, there’s just no reason to go on. Rather than employ the traditional suicide options, Ray wants to do something special; something with pizzazz. The phone book provides his answer; Adventures, Inc. Arriving at the offices of Adventures, Inc., Ray orders a hit on himself.
Ray is introduced to Ichabod Doyle; the man assigned to kill him. Doyle is nothing if not persistent. With customer satisfaction being his first priority, Doyle pulls out all the stops in his efforts to kill Ray. Whether having breakfast at home, sitting in the library or riding the train, Ray is dodging Doyle’s bullets—although some innocent bystanders aren’t so lucky.
Not knowing how long his luck will hold out, Ray has to wonder if it’s possible to cancel a self-imposed hit; before it’s too late.
A dark, satirical comedy, The Tomato Soup Chronicles is a fun read. Written in a diary style, Goza purposely writes out of sequence; which, can be a bit confusing and more than a little annoying trying to remember where each plot line left off—and with my memory, that’s no easy feat. I can’t say whether the random writing style will help or hinder the book; however, for me, I don’t think it added anything of value to the story.
Goza gets three stars for wit, creativity and making me laugh once or twice.
