Chloe Nichols wants nothing more than for her boyfriend Kyle to marry her. At a point where she may have to do something very wrong, like have her cousin bake her a magic cake that will cast a spell over Kyle, making him pop the question. The cake is made and just as Chloe has second thoughts, Kyle eats a piece—soon after, Chloe is engaged.
Now Chloe should be over the moon because all she has ever wanted was Kyle, but she starts question her feelings for Kyle when her best friend Alice, who sees the future, tells Chloe that Kyle is not her soul mate. Chloe makes light of Alice’s prediction until a tall, gorgeous man with the bluest eyes Chloe has ever seen comes into her store—he is Ben Malone and the man Alice saw in her vision.
Chloe is torn between the steadfast Kyle and her new found attraction for Ben, who makes her blood boil in ways Kyle never did. With a little of her own magic, she will test the waters and see if Ben is really the man she should be with. Chloe is walking a very fine line and is in for even more surprises when a few ghosts come to her for help, one being Ben's deceased daughter Mari, who refuses to cross to the other side.
As I read A Breath of Magic, I was on the fence, especially in regards to Chloe. At first, I was not a big fan because she was so manipulative and underhanded to get what she wants. But, after a bit of insight, I came to the conclusion that Chloe is a very lonely woman even with all those people around her who love her.
A Breath of Magic is quirky and a bit out there with a heroine you may end up wanting to ring her neck half the time because she doesn’t know when enough is enough; however, I found myself very interested in seeing how she and Ben would make their relationship work and the mystery behind his daughter Mari’s death.
Tracy is a skilled storyteller and I had no problems whatsoever with her writing. I just wished that Chloe was a bit more likeable. If you are interested in reading something light and fluffy with some nice love scenes, try A Breath of Magic.
