Lillie St. Claire is a modern-day ghost buster known as a “Talent”, she is one of the rare few who can permanently remove spirits from the living world. Under contract with the local police department, Lillie removes harmful, annoying or destructive ghosts from public places, city buildings and private homes.
Lillie’s husband Nathan, an emotionally abusive, sociopath, has just died in a suspicious car accident. Lillie claims she didn’t kill him, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t glad that he’s dead. Either way, she won’t have much time to miss him; while standing naked in her bathroom, her newly-dead husband wanders in—and he wasn’t looking for a kiss.
Enter Sgt. Johnny Thresher, a psi police officer from out of town. Johnny is a rugged man’s man with a large physical presence and a few secrets of his own. In town to offer Lillie a federal job, Johnny’s agenda changes when Lillie goes from potential job candidate to main murder suspect.
Luckily, Johnny is in the house when Nathan-Zombie makes a second pass at Lillie. Although Johnny may agree that something strange is going on, it doesn’t necessarily mean Lillie is innocent.
Lillie and Johnny will find it easier to figure out the murder and mayhem than to deal with the tingling warm and fuzzies they’re getting from each other—when they’re not arguing, that is.
Harris’ series debut begins on a high note. Lillie St. Claire is a strong, often stubborn woman, with a reaper-like talent that is made legit by her contract with the police department. Johnny Thresher’s handsome ruggedness is a welcome departure from the usual smoking-hot pretty boys.
However, the consistency of the characters needs to be tweaked a bit. Johnny’s personality runs hot and cold at a moments notice, which tends to wear on the nerves a bit and Lillie goes from being an independent woman with conviction to whiny and needy. Hopefully, both will get a bit of tweaking before the next book.
Bernita Harris has a potentially-hot series on her hands with Lillie St. Claire. Hopefully hunky Johnny Thresher will stick around to keep the heat turned up.
