Clarity: Kim Harrington Living in a small town on Cape Cod is both a blessing and a curse for the Fern clan. Clarity (aka Clare), her mother, Mary (aka Starla) and her brother Periwinkle (aka Perry) are loved by tourists and loathed by Townies.

In an almost stereotypical twist, Clare and her family live in an old grand Victorian house where they perform readings as entertainment. The Ferns’ gifts—Clarity is a psychic, Perry is a medium and Starla is a telepath—may delight visitors, but the locals regard them as freaks.

When an 18 year old, female, tourist is found shot in a hotel room, the town of Eastport goes into overdrive. It’s the eve of the mayoral election and the height of the tourist season and having a murderer running loose isn’t good for business. In an effort to solve the crime, Clare is brought in to work with the town’s newly-arrived detective and his son, Gabriel.

The case begins to heat up when Clare learns that Perry was with the girl the night she was killed. As if that isn’t enough, a new psychic, Madame Maslov, a fortune teller, puts a strain on the Fern’s business.

Despite their belief that nobody can see the future, Clarity and her family will find out just how wrong they are.

Clarity is a strong character who is definitely all girl. Having just broken up with her boyfriend Justin due to his infidelity, Clare has difficulty keeping her mind on the case now that she’s paired up with the tall-dark-and-handsome Gabriel.

Despite the lack of depth of many of the supporting characters and the story feeling a bit rushed, Ms. Harrington manages to keep the mystery alive; tossing out a few red-herrings to throw the reader off course. Although the twists and turns aren’t that sharp, Kim Harrington’s debut is light and entertaining.
